zaskoczenie

On January 28th 2010 at 19:00 we invite you to an opening of an exhibition of Skoczów Project Za-Skoczenie. Photograhps will be displayed until February 28th 2010.

The exhibition is part of Skoczów Project. Za-Skoczenie. It was created after a photography plen-air that took place in Skoczów, a town in which Polish, Jewish, Czech, but also Silesian and Austrian cultural influences mix. Photographs depice modern villas that were designed by Josef Hoffman and Jacques Groag who were acknowledged architects of Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century. Also, the photographs depict the environment and those who live in the villas.

Before the war villas belonged to Jewish families of Sinaibergers and Spitzers - rich industry tycoons and owners of tanneries who migrated to the United States right before the war. The buildings were devastated and ruined, however, they survived many decades and until today they are used by health care institutions.

The photographs depict their current state and, also, are a sublime peep at the life of the current inhabitants, the traces of their presence, the change and revival of the buildings. Watching the garden through a curtain you could easily feel as if time went back and maybe, in a glance, one could see the past history of this unusual place.

MICHAŁ ZAWADA (b. 1985) was born in Krakow where he also works. Currently he is a student of the fifth year of painting at the Krakow's Art Academy (studio of A. Bednarczyk). He is a graduate of the history of art (Jagiellonian University, Krakow). He is a painter but also deals with photography and video art. In 2008 Zawada was awarded a scholarship of prof. Janina Kraupe-Świderska.
