Promotion of Dr Tomasz Cebulski's book “Auschwitz after Auschwitz" Political and international aspects of the functioning of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum 1980-2010.

Dr. Thomas Cebulski holds a degree in International Relations from the Department of Middle East and Far East Studies of Jagiellonian University and is also a Political Science PhD graduate. He is the founder of the POLIN TRAVEL research center, and is heavily involved in genealogical exploration and documentation of the history of Polish Jews, Holocaust education and Polish-Jewish dialogue.

Slowly and painfully over the last seventy years, we have rediscovered the history of Auschwitz-Birkenau. New details emerge. Despite the intensification of widespread scholarship and historical research in the last two decades, we are losing the fight against time, as we are losing our last witnesses of the actual Auschwitz. These survivors who, after the liberation, often encountered incomprehension and indifference in their lives as Jews.

The living memory of Auschwitz is slowly fading, but what will remain? What is Auschwitz today and how multifaceted is our collective constructed memory of it? What is Auschwitz for you? A historical curiosity which inspires natural fascination with suffering and murder, the global mecca of thanatourism, or maybe something very real, inducing fear of another Auschwitz in the near future? Will the memory of extreme suffering and terror guarantee our greater responsibility to eradicate genocide or is it only testimony to the fascination of thanatourism?
