MiraAleksiun miniDiscussion of the exhibition "Calendar of Memory (according to Bruno Schulz)" and conversation with the artist, Mira Żelechower-Aleksiun.

This series of paintings was inspired by creative collaboration with Double Edge Theater, a theater company based in Ashfield, Massachusetts, U.S.

For years the Double Edge ensemble had been interested in the works of Bruno Schulz, a Polish writer of Jewish origin.

In 2006, they approached Mira Żelechower-Aleksiun with an offer to cooperate on the production of set designs for the play "Republic of Dreams", based on select writings and imaginings by Bruno Schulz.

The paintings represent pages of the Hebrew calendar, which has thirteen months because the month of Adar duplicates in leap years. Thirteen months correspond with thirteen Schulz’s stories. Each painting also bears the symbol of the Zodiac sign, which fits respective month. The paintings incorporate quotes and graphics from Schulz’s drawings, and the artist’s interpretation of Torah readings for the corresponding week. Fragments of Schulz’s texts, evoked in the paintings, have become an integral part of creative themes that inspire Mira Żelechower-Aleksiun’s art. Schulz’s highly emotional visions of the dismay of the Holocaust touch hearts and kindle strong feelings.
